Professor of Computing and Director of the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at Dublin City University
Alan Smeaton is Professor of Computing and Director of the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at Dublin City University, funded by Science Foundation Ireland. His area of research is in multimedia, especially in the application of data analytics techniques to content-based analysis and access to digital video. This initial interest has broadened to include many applications of data analytics in lifelogging using wearable sensors, in monitoring changes in human behaviour, in brain-computer interfaces, and in support for human memory. Alan is a Fellow of the IEEE, a member of the Royal Irish Academy and the Academy’s Gold Medal winner for Engineering Sciences in 2015. Since 2012 Alan has been a member of the board of the Irish Research Council and he is a member of the Scientific Committee for COST | Cooperation in Science and Technology, overseeing a budget disbursement of €300m in Horizon 2020.
